Gran Torino is a movie that is being directed and played by Clint Eastwood and is set to shoot this July in southeast Michigan. Auditions have wrapped up in the past two weeks and the Hmong community has been anxiously speculating on both sides of the fence on how the story will unfold: Disgruntled Korean War vet Walt Kowalski (played by Clint Eastwood) sets out to reform his neighbor, a young Hmong teenager, who tried to steal Kowalski’s prized possesion: his 1972 Gran Torino. I didn’t see it in the theaters, but I saw it online. I thought that some of the “hmoob” stuff they said was NOT true. I mean, correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the only culture that “head touching” is not allowed is Thai. Also, the whole “hmoob giving gifts” as a show of thanks is more like “Chinese/korean/japanes”. I don’t know if those scenes were correct or not. And? Whatever happened to that Sue character…why not call the cops? The setting is set in todays’ modern society right?
